We started our American Indian Unit this past week! Students were assigned a region/tribe to research. They have done a great job gathering the facts and creating a google slide presentation together! They will be teaching the class next week.

We also saw radiation in full effect today! We experimented with s'mores in our solar ovens. They were so yummy that we wanted S'MORE of them 😜

We are #thirdgradethinkers

How convenient that the Book Fair arrived on the week we are learning how to add and subtract decimals! This real world application was fun and engaging :)

We are in the revision part of our personal narratives! We are using Thesarauses to turn "boring" words into more unique, interesting words. We have writing partners so they can help us use better words in our writing, too. These little authors are hard at work!

Teaming Together to help rebuild schools after Hurricane Harvey in Texas

Image result for texas with heart in the middle

Hello parents,

As you all know, Houston was devastated by Hurricane Harvey a couple of weeks ago. I would love for our class to team together and help restock classrooms that lost everything! I emailed someone at Victoria Independent School District in Texas and asked her what they are still in need of. Here was her email reply:

Hi, Ms. Breiner!

Thank you for reaching out to us.  We have been blessed with donations from across our great nation and it is such a comfort to us all to know everyone is praying and rooting for us!  Our families’ current needs are for gift cards or monetary donations to help with groceries, washing laundry and gasoline.  We are still in need of colored pencils and the 100 page composition books and/or poly plastic folders with pockets and fasteners.

Blessings,
Yvonne Rossman- VIctoria Independent School District

I underlined the last sentence because this is how we can help restock their classrooms :) If you are willing to donate any of these items, please send them in with your child by next Friday. I will ship all of them directly to Yvonne. This is a great way to directly impact the victims of Hurricane Harvey! I will be emailing school districts in Florida soon to ask how we can help from the devastation of Hurricane Irma.

Third Grade STEM Project-Composting!

We have started our 3rd grade STEM project on composting! The problem we posed to the kids was that some families are not able to put food on the table. A solution is to teach those families how to maintain a garden... but we have to become experts first! The main aspect of gardening that we are focused on is composting. We currently have a composting garden at our school (pictured) that students will start using very soon! Today, students found the total area we needed to fill with compost. They also researched items on our lunch menu that can and cannot go into the compost bins.

Go Oconee County Titans!! Friday Pep Rally fun :)

We met Mrs. Olivia's special education class this past week! We are so excited to be friends with kids that may look and learn a little different than us.

In order to engage students in our current unit about heat, they were given this problem: "What if you were on a ship, it crashed, and then you were stranded on a deserted island? The sun is beating down on you, so you realize you need to make a hat to shade you from the sun. You only have supplies from a lunchbox that washed up on shore from the boat." Kids had to test each material for stiffness, sweat/water resistance, and comfort before making their hats. I saw so much creativity and critical thinking shine this day!

Students are watching channel one news updates on Hurricane Harvey! They completed activities on the computer about the news clip they watched.

Field Day Fun!

We are the third grade tug of war CHAMPIONS!! Mr. Austin (my husband) came to play! He didn’t know he would leave soaking wet 😂
